Opening a bank account

Q:
I am moving to London shortly on a working visa. Is it possible to open a bank account there with a UK bank when I arrive and do you know the cost?

A:
as far as I know, it is possible. You are however likely to need various forms of ID, including things like your passport and probably also a proof of address in the UK (they may accept something like a rent receipt.)

I don't believe there is any charge for setting up a basic account, though they may not immediately give you an overdraft.

If you are coming from Australia, open one here with Thomas Cook first. That's what I did, and it's much better than doing it when you arrive in the UK. Adam
