Q: What would you suggest for a one day trip outside the city?
A: Depending on what you wanted to see - to see the seaside (Brighton), take a train - 1 hour journey - from Victoria. To see a castle - Hampton Court Palace - take a train - half hour or so journey - I think from Waterloo. You can even get to places like Oxford and Cambridge in a day and back, quite comfortably.
